Liz Seymour CD Release Day in Swarthmore!
The country is changing. There's a new and exciting energy in the air. And in the midst of that comes a new, vibrant voice – one you need to hear.
Liz Seymour loves to sing tough, emotional, rip-your-heart-and-soul-out songs – and she has several on her new CD:
Liz Seymour – That Thing Called Love.
Little did the 25-year-old recording artist know (when she was two years old sitting on the piano bench next to her Mom when Mom played church songs and show tunes) that she would grow up to be a singer.
Being the fifth generation of her family to direct and perform at The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater (near her home outside of Philadelphia, PA USA), music has been a big part of Liz's life since birth.
Once a close family friend (a good musician in her own right) said that at age two, Liz shouldn't be able to hear Mom play a note and then match it with her voice… she was just too young for that: but she COULD.
For As Long As She Can Remember,
Liz Has Been A Singer:
- at the piano with Mom;
- in Nursery Day School while leading all the kids in her own “production” of Peter Pan (and then flying high in the lead role in middle school);
- solos in church and school;
- first chair at District and Regional Choruses;
- State Chorus;
- lead roles in Young People’s Theatre Workshop, Upper Darby Summer Stage, high school, and at The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater;
- and as Miss West Chester University 2004 where her singing (Gimme Gimme from "Thoroughly Modern Millie," which is on her CD) helped her win the crown.
Liz's songs rip your heart out, throw it on the ground, stomp on it, throw it back in, and if it's still working: who cares… by then you will have been touched by Liz's special magic. And yet some songs give you strength, hope, and a new outlook on life as she softly and melodically shows you the tenderness that a truly good friend would show.
Listen as she dedicates herself to love: love broken, love lost, love hoped for, love found.
Her new album features an overall theme of love, although it is not your typical happy-go-lucky or down-in-the-dumps songs about love but rather tells the full-circle story of love. With an underlying feel of country, pop, and Broadway, she is able to create music with a great deal of heart and soul.
Liz has been compared to Bette Midler when she sings The Rose or Wind Beneath My Wings; Carrie Underwood when telling emotional stories; Leann Rimes for her power; Jessica Andrews, Kristin Chenoweth, and others.
Special guest singers on the album include Josh Young (who toured the U.S. as Marius in "Les Miserables" and plays Link in "Hairspray" at the Walnut Street Theatre) and Claudia Carlsson (the well-known Cabaret singer and Executive Director of Young People's Theatre Workshop where Liz was a student and more recently a teacher, director, and choreographer).
Liz is also excited to sing a song composed by Brian Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan (Say The Word), the award-winning New York composing team she grew up with and has known for years. And another by Jason Robert Brown (Still Hurting) which is destined to be a break-out signature song for her. And of course there is the song Liz is so well-known for (Gimme Gimme) by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan originally made famous by Sutton Foster (now on Broadway as Fiona in "Shrek The Musical").

Track 01 – Somewhere Over The Rainbow / Never Never Land
-
When still in Middle School, Liz played Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" as well as Peter in "Peter Pan." Liz still ranks Peter Pan as one of her favorite parts, even all these years later (and flying was a real treat!). It just seemed right to start off this CD with a medley of these famous songs from these musicals loved by the child in each of us.
Track 02 – Waiting For Life
-
This delightfully upbeat number from "Once On This Island" by the Tony-Award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty will get you bouncing in time to the music as Liz gives you a hint of life on the island.
Track 03 – Isn't This Better / Maybe This Time
-
Kander and Ebb (who wrote the music for "Cabaret," "Chicago," "Woman of the Year," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Zorba," "The Rink," "And The World Goes Round," and "Fosse" (among others)), combine their many talents to write both of the songs for this medley. The combination has never been sung this way before, since a violin is playing the melodic line of what is usually a third voice. Listen to see how Liz charms you with this never-before recorded version as she sings two vocal lines and is joined by the violin.
Track 04 – As Long As You're Mine (from the Broadway musical "Wicked")
-
Les Mis star Josh Young (Marius in numerous productions of "Les Miserables" including the national tour and Link in "Hairspray" at Philadelphia's venerable Walnut Street Theatre) sings with Liz that blockbuster song from the Broadway musical, "Wicked." Liz and Josh go back to their high school days when they played opposite each other in "Blood Brothers." Listen for the power each brings to As Long As You're Mine, even in this first recording session (with the click track still playing).
Track 05 – Sleepy Man
-
Sleepy Man is a lilting song that fits so well with Liz’s voice and Music Director Gina Giachero’s harp. Sweet, tender, loving… and Liz sings a duet with herself! Perhaps you never heard this song before but you'll be glad you did when you hear Liz (and Liz!) and Gina.
Track 06 – Say The Word
-
Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk, the Award-winning composing team from New York, grew up in the Philadelphia area and both were close friends with Liz during their formative year. (Liz and Brian recently realized that they have been friends longer than they have been friends with anyone else, first meeting in Nursery Day School.) Each has stayed close as their paths diverged, and Liz brings new color and power to this recently revised version of Say The Word, giving it its first commercial release.
Track 07 – Taylor, The Latte Boy
-
A sweet tale of Taylor, the awkward but cute latte boy who fixes a latte for Liz every day as she prepares for work (at least that's what happens in the music video created for this delightful song). He's awkward, not very good at what he does, but Liz falls in love with him because he fixes her a triple and not just a double… and then one day he even pays for it! She has convinced herself that he loves her too. Let your imagination run with you as this tale is told and you watch the video, below, by clicking on the screen.
Track 08 – How Could I Ever Know?
-
Liz dedicates this song to her Great Uncle Duke (her grandmother's brother), who recently lost the love of his life (and wife for over 50 years), Barbara. The song was written for "The Secret Garden" (Liz played the part of the young girl, Mary, when she was 13) and the character singing it has already died as the story unfolds. She is singing to her husband, asking for forgiveness for having left him so early in life, knowing that he still needs her. Duke and some of Barbara's sisters first heard this song the weekend of Barbara's memorial service in Walnut Creek, California USA… and when you hear it, you'll completely understand why everyone was so touched by Liz and the emotion of this song.
Track 09 – Still Hurting
-
The first time Liz sang this song in rehearsal, there wasn't a dry eye in the room. She understands what it is to have a strong relationship break apart, and she digs deep to get all the raw power this Jason Robert Brown song delivers. Destined to be a break-out signature song for Liz, put yourself in her shoes as you feel the emotions within you that she expresses even in this early recording session.
Track 10 – That's How You Know (from Disney's movie "Enchanted")
-
Liz is joined by a small ensemble as she sings the upbeat, delightful song from "Enchanted" which expresses how you know when he (or she) is the right person for you! Spirited, upbeat, fun, melodic.
Track 11 – I've Been Here Before / It's Never That Easy
-
Claudia Carlsson, the well-known cabaret singer and Executive Director of one of the country's finest workshops for youth theater (Young People's Theatre Workshop), joins Liz for the rarely performed Richard Maltby, David Shire medley, I’ve Been Here Before and It’s Never That Easy. Diva challenging Diva with this one (wait until you hear the power and emotion these two evoke even in this early recording session at the studio!).
Track 12 – Gimme Gimme
-
Gimme Gimme from "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a blockbuster signature song for Liz. First made famous by Sutton Foster who is on Broadway in "Shrek The Musical," Liz has owned this song for several years. She won Miss West Chester University 2004 singing this song. It often appears in her cabaret appearances. When you hear the power and confidence Liz produces, you'll understand why! Please watch the video, below, by clicking on the screen.
(And be sure to listen on the CD for our special "Curtain Call" after this track – it's not listed on the song list!)
